Funding and partnerships

Since 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has served as the leading global authority on the environment. Our ambition is to inform, enable and inspire nations and peoples to improve their quality of life – without compromising that of future generations.

We work under the umbrella of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, identifying and addressing the most relevant environmental issues of our time. Our work is made possible by partners who fund and champion our mission, and we depend on voluntary contributions for 95 per cent of our income.

The Environment Fund is our core source of flexible funds, providing the bedrock of our work worldwide. For example, it supports the implementation of our programme of work, which is endorsed by our 193 Member States.

In addition, earmarked funds (funds given or "earmarked" to a specific project, theme, country etc.) enable us to expand and replicate our programme in more countries and with more partners. Main providers of earmarked funds include the Global Environment Facility, the Green Climate Fund and the European Commission.

Around the world, we work in partnerships with governments, the scientific community, the private sector, civil society, and other United Nations entities and international organizations. We bring together partners to agree on solutions to our common environmental challenges, for example through the UN Environment Assembly
